Wispr Flow is a voice dictation app for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. You hold a hotkey, speak, and Flow types edited text into whatever app has the cursor: an email, a Slack message or the prompt box in Claude or ChatGPT. Built-in dictation transcribes word for word; Flow removes filler words, adds punctuation and handles self-corrections, so if you change your mind mid-sentence ("actually, make that Thursday") the earlier version is dropped before the text lands. A personal dictionary with replacement rules helps it capture company and client names, and Styles adjust the tone for email, work chat and personal messages. We used it daily for a fortnight in live consultancy work, mostly to dictate prompts into AI assistants.

What works well

  • + The clean-up is the real difference from built-in dictation, since restarts and corrections come out as tidy text

Watch out for

  • - In our testing with a Scottish accent it still mishears words, and is less accurate than the most glowing reviews suggest; dictionary entries help but are not foolproof
  • - The free desktop allowance of 2,000 words a week will not cover daily use
  • - Transcription always happens in the cloud, and customer data is processed and stored in the US only
  • - Model training is pre-selected at onboarding, so switch it off before dictating client material
  • - Platform risk, as Apple and the AI assistants keep improving their own built-in dictation

When to choose this

Choose Wispr Flow when you want to speak rather than type into AI tools, email and messaging, and you value cleaned-up text over a verbatim transcript. Budget for Pro if you will use it every day.

Who should look elsewhere

If you only dictate occasionally, the dictation built into your operating system, or into ChatGPT and Claude, may be enough, and Apple's iOS 27 update improves iPhone dictation. If client confidentiality or data residency rules out cloud transcription, Superwhisper can run speech models on-device on Apple Silicon Macs. If you want a record of a meeting rather than dictation, Granola, Otter.ai and Fathom are built for that.

Risk notes All transcription runs in the cloud, and Wispr states customer data is processed and stored in the United States with no UK or EU region. For zero retention, turn model training off and Dictation cloud storage off. The pricing page describes SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 compliance, while Wispr's own security FAQ lists a SOC 2 Type I report (April 2026), with Type II under observation, and an ISO 27001 Stage 2 audit scheduled for June 2026, so ask for the current reports before rolling it out to a team handling client or regulated material. A UK Addendum to the data processing agreement is available.
